I saw some larger 8-9" JDs for sale at $50 at a LFS. Would you pay that much? It seems over priced to me.
This also makes me think why would someone buy a fast growing common cichlid for so much? I think I would if it were a slow growing one because the time it takes. What are your thoughts?

That an LFS can charge what they want for a fish.

And that stocking large cichlids consume a lot of tank space and food (i.e. overhead).

It's most likely a trade in.

If you're a regular customer, offer them what you think is reasonable and maybe they'll accept it.

That's a good point. I've had some fish refused by LFS even if I wasn't looking for money. I recently traded my JD for 4 firemonths. This store said that JD will sell much faster than the firemouths and might get more for him. I bought the JD for $5 at 3'' from another LFS. I never went back to see what they were charging for my old one though. I just hope someone is enjoying my old fish. To me he wasn't worth selling. Still $50 is pretty steep for a JD. Maybe $30 would be reasonable.

Here in vegas any cichlids over the 5" mark are usually 40 bucks and higher. Some places dont prepare for larger cichlids and just get them in with trades so they sell higher because they spent more on them. We dont have any stores here that will make a deal of any kind. Theyll give you a credit of how much they feel for the fish itself for trade in and its up to you to spend it or not here. They dont do a fish for fish here just a fish for price and you go with what they offer. I cant stand some of their prices here like a 5 or 6" oscar for 50-60 bucks, they kind of do a 10 bucks per inch idea. A 6'' dovii costs the same as a 6'' oscar or 6'' anything really. So in the long run a 8 or 9" JD would easily be at least 65 bucks here.

Jack Dempseys are slow growers, and big fish have been around for a while. At that size, I see $45-$65 regularly around here, and more for high quality (body shape and color) specimens. I have never seen a full grown Electric Blue for sale.

This one was pretty plain and had the typical "banana" shape. The color wasn't that great either. If it were a gold, BGJD or EBJD I would expect a higher price for an adult. I have never seen adult EBJDs for sale either.

Only if tankmates dictated an adult fish, otherwise I'd rather grow one out.

Totally agree , JD's are slow growers. It is better you buy them at smaller sizes and grow them out.

The JD I had grew really fast and was one of the fastest growing CA cichlids I have had. He was very thick and chunky too. Now the firemouths I traded him for have been really slow growing.
