Go for the biggest used tank you can find!
 
get 125gal wit some emps on it or a wetdry and get some fish tat you like.... you like schooling fish?species tanks? single speciman tank?? schooling fish would be maybe 3-5 clown loaches, or tin foil barbs, somthing like.... species tanks could be maybe 20-30 african cichlids, or certain puffer fish, single specimans could be large cichlids: Oscars, Red Devils, GT's, maybe a single jag.... or maybe even some pike cichlids some large ones like Xingu 1's, or some lugubris type pikes.

blow $499 on a fish, and then $1 for some feeders. lol. j/k

If you dont already have a tank - i'd get a big one too! You can find good deal on used tanks. Just have to be vigilent.
 
If your parents don't mind what you spend it on and you can spare the cash ,than just go crazy! I would go for as big a tank I could buy or whatever expensive set-up filter I have always wanted, If you want to blow all of it on a single fish maybe get a korean perch or some gulper cats, or any fish you have always wanted but didnt have $500 for!
 
Depending how crafty you are you could build a tank and have money left over for a DIY filter and fish to put in it.
