Thats right!

Firts of all, please sorry if my english is not so fluid or well writting but im going to make a effort :D

Im planning in building a 500 Gal Glass Tank for African Ciclhids that is going to be in a Commercial Area (near to a Cafeteria and stuff like that) so the filtration issue is very important for this matter... Here where i live is very difficult to find good filtration equipment (Eheim nevermind :() so i was thinking that for this Tank with two FX5 with good carbon and all the filtrations pads for the FX5 i will be fine... (i can´t any kind of sump) what do you thing about it? please tell me about it!! thx in advance

two FX5s would do nice but your going to want to load the middle and bottom baskets with bio media

Hey Koop!

Thanks for the reply... i think in fill up with Ceramic Rings for Biological Filtration... what do you thing about it? and any one have others ideas for filtration? thanks!!

Why is it that you can't do a sump?

Could you do an Overhead Filter?

I personally don't think 2 fx5's would be enough for a 500 gallon with any kind of heavy stocking.

Sounds like a fun project. Personally I would build a sump. But if you want to go the canister route go for three FX5's if they are the only ones available. There are also ocean clear (I think thats what they are called) canisters that you hook up a pump too I think you can get great flow with those canisters and there is a model with a UV built in.

i just bought a 460gallon off a guy who used two nu-clear filters and a plastic homemade sump and the tank looked pretty clean with heavy amount of bioballs in the built in overflow and also in the sump. I am building a sump from either my 75 or my 125 for the 460 so i don't have to change it all the time and i can put heaters in it and airstones and lots of plants!!!

if your going to do a heavy stock then the flow of the FX5 over the biomedia will be too fast and you wont get enough exposure time. Too bad you can't get any eheims because the best filter for bio filtration and subsequently a more heavily stocked tank is an eheim 2260... you could've done three of those (two being bio and one filter pads and carbon) or two eheims and one fx5 (two eheims bio and some carbon and the fx5 being all filter pads)

you can buy whatever u need on the internet...

2 FX5's wont be enough that's almost the amount i have on my 120 gal tank...lol..

also filling it with carbon and filtration pads is a terrible idea....very little bio filtration and it will clog like crazy and reduce the flow unless u replace and/or clean it often!
i recommend using biological media...the FX 5 has lots of huge sponges which will provide u with mechanical filtration...

u need to go with a sump..u can find whatever u need to make one on the internet and at the hardware store.
