what type of filters can work for 500 gallons? i planned on two canisters, i like to keep it simple with sponge media which has worked best for me so far, big fish of course so big poops ha ha :). im looking for company/model numbers. decent prices too. thx

I agree a sump is the best option unless you wanted to go sump and a Nice canister for polishing , I am going to be setting up a 360 gallon 100 x 30 x 30 and I am actually going to run a Huge sump system with a wet/dry trickle using pot scrubbies for Bio filtration and 2 canisters to polish I am going to have the hose towards the upper half of the tank because I plan on using black sand as substrate and don't want to suck up any sand into the canisters and mess them up ! ( back and bottom of the tank is going to be painted flat black also) and I am going to be running a UV not sure what size yet but leaning towards a 24 - 36 watt and for my turn over rate of the tank I am going to use 2 3,500 GPH ( Might actually go more!!) I am liking the idea of the quiet ones pump that is remote controlled so you can adjust it ...would come in handy to tweek the sytem .

I poured a slab of concrete that is 2 feet thick 40 inches wide and 14 feet long where the tank is going to go I ran myself a drain and got it tied right into the sewer system !! Heck of alot easier water changes :) and I ran Hot and Cold lwater lines less than a foot away from where the tank is going to be :) I see a 24/7 water change system in my near future :) I just told you what I have planned for my little system so that maybe it will give you some ideas for yours all it takes is a little preping and planning can really make this hobby of ours alot more enjoyable :-)

100g plus sump with an XF5. That would polish and handle bio. Very versitile too, it's what I use.

When I had my 600g I ran two separate modular canister systems. It had one pump, one Ocean Clear mechanical, and one Ocean Clear bio on each system. It also had an inline heater on one system and and inline UV on the other. Worked good for me.

You have an overflow on the back of your tank (if your tank is not drilled), and then an outtake hose to lead down into the sump, then fill the sump with biomedia and such, and then have a return pump and a return line back to your tank. It can get a lot more complex than that, but that's the basics. If you research it yourself, you'll learn more than just someone telling you exactly what to do.

nice. i like overflows they are a very clever idea i would like to have one. what exactly is biomedia? i have only ever used carbon and sponges.
