could it be possible to have 4-5 yellow lab cichlids and some shelldwelling cichlids in a 50g? im thinking of having alot of rock and alot of live plants for cover in there tank. is this possible?
First of all, we need dimensions of the tank. Second of all, plants and mbuna don't mix well - generally ending with the plants being dug up, chewed up, or both.
4-5 should be fine especially if there is only one male. That might be hard to secure though depending on where you get your fish and how big they are when you get them.
I'd be pretty concerned with the shelldwellers if they were anything short of a full grown adult. But if there was enough cover it might work, I've never done it before though.
