Is a 55 big enough for one or possibly two Columbian catfish? I realize they have to be in brackish when they get bigger, but I just want to know if they will even live in there for life?

not really, they can get to 13.5" long and a 55g is only 12" wide, a 75g would be better

I think a 75 would be much better, granted a 55 will last them for a while but as the above posters said they can get up to 13" or so ... as will any fish research it and find its max size and make your tank choice with that info and in turn you will have a much happier fish.

I'd go even bigger if you are able. Initally a 55 would be fine but i've had them get to over 16 inches and live in full salt water. Those fish are a very active fish even at 16"+
Bigger is better with them.
