Hey all. Now that I have gotton into the saltwater fish I had a Question about filtration. I have two hang on back filters on my 55 gal. One is a 30-60 power and I have an extra I put on that is a 5-15 power. My tanks stays pretty clear all the time. The filters each have bio fiber which hold benificial bacteria, carbon and filter cartrages. I will also be getting a protein skimmer a little later on. Is this enough filtration for a FOWLR tank. Thanks for any help.

thats probably enough if you stock the tank very lightly with a couple four to five inch fish. but i think youd be better off switching to a larger hang on the back or getting a canister filter even. just might save you a lot of time/trouble.

A protien skimmer and refugium is all you need! if you cant afford the refugium, just buy a good ass skimmer like a corallife, or berlin.

what does 60 power mean? or 5-15?

WHat type of filters are these? and how many GPH are they pumping out? also, how large is the media ?

60 power means it can filter up to 60 gallons and 5-15 power means it filters up to 15 gallons in a tank. They are hang on back aqua tech power filters. Marinelans makes them. They take regular filter cartrages plus a bio fiber pad to hold beneficial bacteria. I also put a mesh bag full of carbon in the 60 power. I will be getting a protein skimmer to go with these two filters when I convert. Is this enough for a 55 gal. FOWLR?

A good rule of thumb is: if your filtration gear can process the entire tank volume in an hour, then you're good to go. Thing is, there's tons of other ways to set up filtration. Your hang-ons are fine but they do tend to be nitrate factories. That means you're going to need to be doing slightly more than regular water changes. A protein skimmer will help, of course. But watch your feeding. That's more nitrate right there.

So, show us some pics, dude! :cool-1:

My main tank is a 55 with fish and corals. i can tell ya a good protein skimmer is a must. and i myself, use a wet/dry sump. no refugium. although ive heard the refuge/skimmer, is a great way to go. i have some dead mans finger planted in the tank and some other macro algae, gets left alone for the most part and the tank is healthier than ever. so after wasting your time reading all this, the second sentence i typed is all u needed to read.
