About a month ago, my old scratched up 55 finally sprung a leak in the bottom and started draining into the den.

I went into panic mode and moved the remaining water and the fish into an old 30 gal tank I had - what a long night that was.

Didn't think I can trust that old one anymore, so I bought a new 55 and re-built it. I decided to go with no background and to keep the rocks lower.

Oddly, I never have to add water between changes to this tank, and I used to add water twice a week to my old one.

I guess it was leaking all the time? To where I wonder?

Does the den have carpet?

or this new tank maybe has a tighter lid on top, whereas the old one didnt and more water evaporated off?

Yes, it is carpeted, but the carpet way always dry.

I forgot that I had to re-cut the 2 pieces of plexiglass that make up the cover. This tank is slightly taller and thinner than my old one, which was also weird. When I did that, it was a much tighter fit. Maybe that cut down on the evaporation. I was getting mold paranoia. Thanks.

Thanks, he's super cool and very mellow, which is great because the tank is a disaster when it comes to its mix. I bought most of these fish before I ever logged into any Mbuna sites so I was just buying what looked nice. Amazingly, despite the eclectic mix, they all get allow really well.
