I am planning on building a stand for my new 55 gal tank. I am going to use 2 columns of concrete blocks about 36" tall. Each column would be 16 x 16 x 36. To get better support for the tank itself, I plan on running one 1 x 6 and two 1 x 4 pieces the length (50" for extra room around the tank) This will also distribute the weight across and down to the columns of blocks. I also want to frame the blocks so I can add panneling and moulding to make it look a lot better. I also plan on some interior shelves. I plan on starting this weekend and hope to have most of it done. I will get some pics and schematics up so you can make all the comments you want.

Happy Monster keeping.

P.S. I am also going to etch in the monster "M" logo on the corner of my tank. Hope to have that soon!:woot:

That sounds like over kill to me. If you really want to ensure the stand is sturdy you can use pressure treated lumber. it will be lighter than concrete and more than strong enough to support your tank.

do you really want it 3ft tall? you have to add in the height of the 55g you dont want it to tall to do water changes and gravel vacking. I made that mistake and made mine 3ft and it is sometimes difficult but i am 6'4 so it isnt that hard. 30'' would be a good size still keeps the tank around eye level. heres some pics for you the first is my 55g with a 3ft stand, and then my 120g with a 30'' stand, both i built myself for around $50-$60 combined for the 2.
