I'm guessing you've seen this one a lot. New to this but I'm thinking green terror, jewels, oscars, convicts. Not sure though. I guess those are pretty comon but they seem to be easy to get. Open to some different ideas. Numbers and fish. My ph is around 7 and last time I checked a little on the soft side in my tank. Which is strange because I thought we had pretty hard water.

Green Terror is a no it needs 75G, a Oscar needs a 75G, but you can do Jewels or Convicts..but it would be cool to do something like Firemouths, Rams, or even a Jack Dempsey, Electric Blue Jack Dempsey these are NOT community ideas the Jacks would be a single fish tank. The Firemouths or Rams could possibly be community though..good luck

Oscars definitely get too big for a 55, and green terrors normally do as well. Jewels and convicts would work though. If you're looking to breed, a pair of cons are an easy starting point and would do well in a 55. Good luck.

I you're open to other things, salvini is a nice fish that I've always wanted to keep and a pair of them would do well in a 55 as well. EBJD is another route you might want to explore.

I do like the salvini idea. I have not seen any at my LFS though. Is that something you think I could special order or any ideas where to get them. Also I just read something about them getting " hole in the head" some type of disease. Sounds kind of strange .

Most new world cichlids are prone to HITH disease--just keep the water clean, change your filters every now and then, feed a good pellet as a staple and do weekly or bi-weekly water changes. As far as where to get them, depending on your area, salvinis can be a tough fish to come by (I've never seen one in any of the LFS that I go to here on Long Island). Your best bet is to order them from Jeff Rapps at tangledupincichlids.com...guy has quality fish.

If you cant get ahold of any salvini, maybe look into gettin a pair of sajica.. a nice lookin fish with a little personality too

I don't agree with Jack Dempseys having to be by themselves or not being a community fish. I have a 55gal also, which houses 3 tigers barbs, 2 dempseys, 2 convicts, 1 pleco, and 1 peacock eel they get along fine as long as the convicts arent breeding lol
