I've had a 55 gallon tank setup for about six months now with two juvenile Oscars and a juvenile Pleco. Now that they are getting a little bigger, and my budget has allowed, I'm moving them into a brand new 125 gallon that I've been cycling for the past few weeks.

This leaves me with the 55 gallon setup, and I'm not sure what I want to put in it. Since my 125 will be dedicated strictly to those three fish, I want to make the 55 gallon into a community tank with a bunch of schooling and colorful fish. Something that brings out a natural and colorful look.

Anyone have some suggestions for me?

A nice school of different color rainbow fish together with maybe a pair of Angels along with some smaller fish like cardinal/neon tetras and some harlequin rasboras would look good. If you plan on making it planted it would look nice with some DW and for some bottom dwellers you can do a nice school of some Cory cats and add a farlowella catfish or two. I had a setup similar to this along with some swordtails and it looked great

I definitely like some of those ideas. For some reason I'm just not a big fan of angelfish. What do you think of something like this:

3x clown loach
8x tiger barb
6x rainbow fish
1x farlowella catfish
1x redtail shark or gourami

I would stay away from the Tiger barbs since they tend to be a bit aggressive in my experience. I've heard PLENTY of cases where they are fine but also PLENTY of cases where they are a total PITA. A pair of Gouramis would be nice in place of the Angelfish. the redtail shark I'd probably stay away from since they do get to a decent size and can be kind of mean. Clown loaches will do fine and they are great fish. In place of the Tiger barbs maybe you could go with some Cherry barbs/golden barbs. Only problem is the Guoramis could get a bit aggressive but if you have a nice school of some good dither fish then you should be fine!

Discus...Not very affordable in most cases...and sometimes they have aggression issues...but stunning fish nonetheless.

Go with a Tiger Barb tank!
@ 20 with a mix of greens, albinos, normals, platinums and the new glo versions. I have a 50 set up like this, I added a few Giant Danios, Buenos Aries Tetras, chinese algea eaters and cory cats. Its a fun tank with lots of movement and color.

I definitely like the idea of a Tiger Barb tank. Do you happen to have any pictures? I would love to see it.

For some reason I've never really been a big fan of Discus, and from what I understand they require pretty specific water specifications.

What should I look for in a pair of gouramis? Is it best to go Male/Female?
