For saltwater best to use a sump/overflow so you can use the sump space for heater, skimmer.
The only equipment you put in tank is some circulation power head if you need extra flow or distribute the flow in the direction you wanted.

this is what i was thinking a overflow to sump... for the simplest was and probably better for a beginner as well i google and it says 30 gals is a good size sump for a 55gal?

The bigger is always better, it would add more water volume into your system but yeah 30G sump is fine for 55G

If you're going to drill the tank be careful, a lot of 55's are made entirely of tempered glass.

I definitely would go for a sump for a reef tank. If you can fit a 30 gallon tank as a sump then you should definitely go for it. If not, a 20 gallon will be plenty. Heck, if you can get a double 55 stand then you can use a 55 as your sump. Lol

see i dont want to drill the tank (would be a dream) i was just going to have the ugly over flows up and over the back to the sump... i have a stand with not to much room under but im going to go shopping for a sump to build on soon... i have the used 55 gal that came with the stand but i dont think it would fit under it and i also got a 10 gallon i need to repair the silicone with so yea i think i know were to head in and ill update yall when i get something going ... if i can find a double 55gal stand might go with that idea w/e i can do on the cheap ...im just happy to have the biggest tank i could afford i think i got a good price on it compare to shopping for used ones now just one step at a time be awhile before i get to splash some water in but hey gotta start some weres i guess
