I live in a condo located on the second floor. Growing up I always had a basement to put my big tanks, however I no longer have that luxury. I'm worried a 55 gal tank full of water is too much weight up here. It's a nice place and well built, but I still want to make sure it's safe before I do any damage to the place. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Mike

IMO you would be more than OK. Be cautious about the stand you choose though if you are that concerned. Use a stand that does not have four "legs" that all of the weight is transfered to sticking out of the bottom. Use a stand with a flat bottom and it will spread around the weight better across the floor joists and not focus it all in four small spots.

Thanks. I thought I would fine, but just needed a second opinion. I also didn't want to kill the old lady who lives on the first floor with a flying fish tank haha.

Not sure most would consider a 55g as a "big tank". Either way you'll be fine.

Yea I agree a 55 gal is not a big tank to this group, but my catfish would definately like the extra room for now. I bought a RTC and a RTC x TSN when they were 2 inches and now they are about 8 and 9 cramped in a 29 gal. My plan is to have an indoor pond for these guys in the near future. Thats ofcourse when I outgrow my tank(condo) and move into a house with a basement.

I have a 75, 65, 29, and a 20 on the second floor of a 100 year old house. the 75 is in one room and the other 3 are all in my bedroom. The 65 on one wall and the 29 and 20 on one stand against another wall. If anything, maybe try to have the tank run perpendicular to the floor joists and set it against a load bearing wall if your concerned.

a 55 should be fine i would start to worry when you get up to a 100

You're good with have the 55 on the 2nd floor. I use to have one on my 2nd floor for several years. I was totally fine.
