i just picked up a 55 gal tank that has broken trim on pretty much every corner.

i know on a smaller tank the trim is just there for decoration but for the 55 it has the support beam in the middle which is also cracked, still there and intact, just a crack going down it.

thats gotta be somewhat important right??? i have the tank filled out side and i cant really see any bowing but figured i would ask. i might try and stiffen up the middle support. any ideas??

the trim is important and the tank can break. id also worry if its busted up too bad as it isnt supporting the sides well. some people may say its fine but thats a 55 gallon mistake that i wouldnt want to clean up if it happens to give.if you replace the trim get it from this guy. he is the cheapest ive ever found. you would pay under 20 shipped to u my trim for my 45 tall with center brace was like 8 bucks when i checked it thru him. plus shipping of course. his site only has wholesale prices so you would have to call him to get retail price. his number is on the site. http://cciaquarium.com/

if u keep it get a piece of plexiglass the same size and length of the center support. place it underneath. clamp it. drill holes on each side about an inch from the side of the tank one at a time and place pop rivets in the wholes as u drill them then put some in the middle on either side of the break. if you drill two holes without placing a rivet in the first one, the second one will never line up. trust me it sucked. use washers for extra support. private message me for more detail if needed.

gotcha, that sounds like a good idea with the plexiglass. all the trim is there, but i mean that sounds pretty cheap for brand new trim.

its much stronger than the trim was in the first place and it last a long time. i have fixed over 50 big tanks this way for several people and never heard of one breaking again. i usually use eight rivets on a 55.

and as for replacing its the cheapest ive ever seen. i asked my LFS to order it for me and they said 55 bucks. i wasnt paying that i could have got a used tank for that much lol. so i fixed it myself and then bought another tank.
