not much that i like will fit in a 55 forever.. but i've heard stories of small schooling fish like neons being great and fun to watch in a 55.
or africans, i'm setting up a nice little 55 with 4 or 5 africans and some little african catfish for my 21 year old son this next week (the whole setup will be moved to his room in August for his birthday).

they will outgrow a 55 pretty quickly.
try gouramis, tetras, small cichlids like rams, kribs and keyholes.
best bet is to go to your LFS, make a list of things you like, then research them to see if they are suitable.

from what i've read and heard, you can breed jack dempseys in a 55. go for it and make some money.
