I have a newly acquired 55 gallong acrylic tanks that's roughly 19" deep by 36 inches wide. I have two t8 light fixtures I could use, or I could use the 4 bulb t5 HO unit that came with it. Being that from what I read Discus like low light situations I figured I'd go with the T8 fixtures. They take 18" bulbs. Any suggestions on a particular bulb I should go with. I believe Discus go by the 1 watt per gallon rule, but if I'm wrong correct me. I want to put this tank together right. All tips are welcome, thank you.

depends if its going to be planted. if you have plants i would recommend the t5ho if not the two t8 are good. if you get domestics dicus in my opinion bright lights doesnt do anything to them. however, if you have wild discus then low light is recommended. as for bulbs. depends, plants or not? for plants its best to get something in the 65k-10k but if no plants any buld will do. brighter light and tank will make the discus nicer and they wont pepper up unless u get albino's. also dont get black substrates or black background or your discus will most likely pepper up unless you like that look.

thank you very much for your help. I may do a planted and just leave the T5's on there, any suggestions on plants?

depending on the substrate you'll use and co2 or not. if you use co2 you can grow just about any plants. its a plus to use soil substrate such as flourite, eco-complete and others. you can grow more plants with those substrates. if you go with sand like pool filter sands or playsands, they have very lil to no nutrients at all. so it limits you to certain plants you can grow. but to name a few easy plants are crypts, anubias and vals especiall jungle vals. those seem to be the most fav for low-tech set up. and are pretty easy to grow.
