Was wondering if a 55gallon would be capable of houseing a ropefish for life or if I would need to upgrade has it got larger. Use to have one and seemed to thrive for the 8months I had it before it slithered out of the tank in the middle of the night. A while back on another forum I was told no. But it was the same forum that said a 29gallon was too small for a sengal. Although from the posts I've read here it seems that most members believe a 29gallon to be fine for a sengal. So thought I'd come to the experts and see what y'all think on the subject.

Many Polys outgrow a 55, but not sure about senegal. I believe they get beyond 12", the width of a 55 gal.

i too feel a 29 is too small for a senegal for life, it may be the bare minimum, but a 55 is much better and should be good for life. a ropefish would also be fine in a 55 for life since they don't usually get much bigger than 16"-18" in captivity.

From what I've read senegals get a maxium of 12" so I'm not worried about the senegal out growing the tank... It's a ropefish I was wondering about... But since ropefish do get larger than 12" I guess it proabley wouldn't work for the longterm. If I did decide to get another one.

maybe you missed my reply since we were probably posting at the same time, but the ropefish will be fine, even though they get larger than 12". they are long, slim and very flexible, and they take a long time to grow.

Really thats great... apperciate your response.

no problem. if you really want your tank to be as wide as your fish is long, a suggestion would be a 50 or 60 breeder, both about 18" wide, good for both senegal and ropefish.

Thanks for the suggestion, but think my next tank will be a 75 or larger, but thats proabley a while off... thanks again:)

yes, ropes will actually grow to around 24", but they are slow growers and as said before they are very flexible like a snake and will do fine in a 55 for life pretty much.

i believe a senegal can live in a 29 for life, but it'll have a much better life if kept in something like a 40 breeder or 55 gallon tank. Albino senegals are a much better option if you want to put something in a 29, as 95% of the time they don't get to 12"
