55 gallon african cichlid tank, Nasty smell!

Its been happening for a while, Just a really strong FISHY smell, i open up my hood and it bursts out into my face. (the back of the hood is open too).

It has fine aragonite, mexican pot rock, fake plants, its moderately over stocked. (not like OMG THATS HORRIBLE, more like thats a bit overstocked.)

2 HOBs dont remember name, both are rated for 60 gallon tanks, and a Ecco eheim 2336 which is rated for a 80 gallon tank, and a 250gph powerhead.

I'm not really sure whats wrong. I do very regular maintenance to the tank, its always smelled a little fishy but NEVER like this!

carbon will get rid of it,,, i prefer purigenthough

I have activated carbon in my filters. not helping.

When is the last time you changed the carbon?

Is the rim of your tank clean of uneaten food and debris all the way around the tank? If that little ledge that the glass lids sit on sits dirty for a while, they can really make the tank stink when you open it.
