so as you've heard i have four new discus in my 55 gallon aquarium. I was wondering if it would be okay to squeeze a fifth guy in there. My reasoning behind this is that the four i have school but there is one bully and it seems as if he might have zeroed in on the runt of the four because one of my discus isnt always with the main three and i think a fifth will equal out the pack a little bit so whats the thoughts on five?

im not sure of an exact age they are about two inches in size and plants are java fern and four tall amazon swords planning on adding another for more cover
in situations like this i find it easier to replace the aggressor than buy more and more fish to diverse the aggression. with that said discus do better in a group of 5 anyways. and 55g with 5 discus should be fine most will tell you 10g per discus is good.
side note empty your tank completely at 2 inch theyre very sensitive and needs alot of water changes and super clean water. best to grow them out in a bare tank. its easier to clean a bare tank than a well decorated one

you could add a fifth with no problem, but that may not stop the bully. sometimes they will just stop on thier own. I agree with arowanas. bb is the best way to raise juvies. it's very important to keep the water prestine for growing discus. lots of feedings per day and lots of large wc's. not saying you can't raise discus in a decorated tank. many people do. but realize that it's much harder and you risk having stunted fish that may never reach thier full size.
All good anwsers. What I would do with two inch discus slowly implement the plants slowly one at a time over a period of time. Feed well to maintain a nice round body not a football shaped body this will help from stunting the fish and gives them a chance to grow. 5 discus in a 55 is fine. Amazon Swords can get rather large so put just one in the aquarium so not to over take the aquarium. Discus come muture and start pairing up at around 18 months old. The bully keep a eye out if the fish don't stop move the fish.
