my mom is lookin into making a saltwater setup, she has a 55 gallon tank, what does she need to get it going ( filter protein filter, live rock etc) i know nothing bout saltwater, what does she need to get it setup and running properly, besides the tank

Depends on if she wants to reef or if she just wants fish only. She'll need at least 10X water turn over per hour, a heater or a couple of heaters will be better if she's not reefing, a hydrometer, test kits for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, ph, kh, "maybe more if she wants to reef." She also needs to decide what look she wants her tank to have natural etc. I would also get the materials needed to q.t. her new pets as she sets up the tank. Keep it simple a bare bottom 20 gal, a sponge filter ,"keep the sponge stashed in your main or sump until needed" a flower pot or pvc pipe .

she doesnt want a reef tank, so a list of things that she would need for a 55 gallon tank would help her alot, how much will she spend on everything to get it running, not including fish n tank

Well , she won't need halides or a chiller so that will save her a lot . She'll need the skimmer, power heads, live rock, sand, heaters, test kits, nets and a q.t. I don't know if you're close to a town where you can pick up your live rock or not and shipping can be sort of expensive but, so can buying live rock in a small town. If she wants everything ready made it would cost somewhere from $600-$800 U.S. If she's willing to make most of her own live rock and live sand you could shave off a couple of hundred.
