How many discus and how many neon tetras to have a nice set up and what plants do discus prefer because i know they prefer a pretty heavilly planted tank? and im switching my 55 gallon from a jack dempsey tank to a discus tank so water is already set up for fish and doing a 50% water change before adding discus and tetras.

I'd go with no more than 4-5 discus. Tetras might not work, they may get eaten. Plants, none. There are no plants found in the waters where discus come from. In fact, many people keep them in bare tanks.

Yea i think i might go with 4 discus and a few neon tetras like six and what would be wrong having one discus and then neon tetras i know discsu like to school but would it be a huge problem to keep a single adult discus?

Discus definitely need to be in groups. They're a schooling, social fish and find comfort in numbers.

I definitely would not keep neons with the discus. I thought it was an ok combo since they are all peaceful, but my neons soon got eaten. I didnt think the discus would eat them, but I guess the saying " they'll eat it if its small enough" is true

10g min for ea discus so a 55 can hold 5-6 discus but if you want to mix i would do 5 discus and 6 columbian tetra. also they do like heavy planted tank, most keep them bare since juv requires so much water change that any deco or substrate makess it hard to keep the tank extra clean.

what size will your discus be?
