I just got a new used 55 gallon. I was  confused:confused: on what type of filter to use. Are the Marineland bio-wheel a good type to use? I was going for the 350. If it sucks then what is better without costing me to much.
Thanks

Skip the penguin line, it's crap.

Get the emperor 400 by marineland, or if you don't mind doing some modification and have an extra powerhead laying around, buy an Aquaclear 110 and do the bio-wheel mod.

Even better, buy two emp 400's or two AC 110's. Both are great filters and its a matter of choice. The aquaclear with the biowheel mod makes it the best HOB to have since the mechanical media is permanent and it has the superior bio from the wet/dry of the wheels.

There's been serveral debates on thies two filters, doing a search will probably answer all your questions.

Aqua Clear gets my vote.

AC with the biowheel mod, or AC 110 and a Emp 400

I'll probably get crucified for this but I ran a Marineland H.O.T. 250 with stuff similar to bio-bale in the carbon container and the discharge running to a Pro 60 biowheel set up for almost 10 years with ZERO problems.

I'm sure there are better set ups but this worked perfectly for me.

IMO I use Penguin Bio wheels on all of my cichlid tanks and they have worked great for me.

I think the emperor is a expensive penguin and you cant see the wheel spinning with the emperor. I have also been running penguin 200s and 350s for years with absolutley no problems.
I have not tried an aqua clear power filter but have never heard anything bad about them only good and some people live by them.

If you want to to go with a HOB, I've always used the Emperor series and it works great for me. I've also used the AquaClear series as well and that has also worked for me well. I do like the Emperors better because you can extend the intake tube if you like. adjust the spray bar, media is an easy replacement, and it just looks better IMO.

Same here. I run them on more than 50 tanks. Five of which are 55g. My 55g tanks are the most heavily stocked of my tanks and one AC 70/300 is more than sufficient to handle the bioload of 200+ Peacock Bass up to two inches in size.:)
