if 55 gallons enough to keep a musk turtle in? and do they really need a basking light? some people say theres never comes out to bask

I know nothing of turtles but, Wouldn't you want to give him the best environment you possibly could?even if he never uses it, I'd say the least you could do is give him the option.

I mean, you're going to keep this animal in a glass box. I think he deserves every amenity you can give him. No?

I actually have my daughters musks in with her cichlids in a 47gal bowfront. They dont come out of the water often

They do not need lights but do need a place to dry off from time to time. 55 is big enough for a small group of them.

They should always have access to come out of the water to COMPLETELY dry off. Some turtles like to bask more than others. I keep a pair of Stinkpots and the male basks every day but I've never seen the female come out of the water at all. This of course doesn't mean she does not bask while I'm not home.

Of course I would provide the best environment for them as I do with all of my pets. I only ask out of curiosity and the tank would have an area for them to dry off. I'm debating if I want to add one to my cichlid tank and planning what is needed IF I decide to do it. thanks for all the input

Unless you want your cichlid tank to become a buffet for your turtle, i would suggest a different tank. These turtles do need a heat light and a uvb/uva light. I have observed them basking countless times in the wild.

some bask for heat in colder climates but they can synthesize vitamin D3 on their own without the UV lights. No need to spend the money on them- put it towards a nice tank for them.
