Hi All,

I'm brand new to this site and I just started my first freshwater tank and I'm stoked! I'm in the process of cycling it right now but wanted to know what you guys thought of my setup and whether the filtration I have is enough..

55 Gallon Tank
1 Emperor 400
1 Airstone
Rena Heater
Natural Gravel
Natural Rocks
Artificial Wood Piece

I plan on keeping either African Cichlids or just a few South Americans (Jack Dempsey or Green Terror or Oscar). Do you think I need another HOB filter or would a power head be best (to increase water circulation)? Thanks for all your help, open to any suggestions you guys have regarding filtration for my new tank.

blue tiger shrimp!

Right, I understand you can only have 1 Oscar OR 1 JD per 55 gallon tank. I do plan on upgrading in the near future as the fish outgrow the tank. Do you think I would need another filter or is the one EMP 400 enough? Thanks.

No, even a single Oscar will outgrow a 55g tank. They can be fit into one but they dont have enough room to move at their sizes to be healthy. I think you should be fine though with either a JD or some Africans. Welcome to the site, and fish keeping.

Emp 400 should be fine for a 55g. If you worried and want extra filtration a good option would be power-head connected to a sponge-filter on the other side of the tank. give you extra biological filtration and better water aeration. Nothing wrong with redundancy in a tank.

But i don't see why your 400 wouldn't be fine alone, as long as bio-loads not real high and it doesn't sound like you considering anything in unreasonable quantities.

Good to hear. Like you said, I know not to overstock my tank and will only be keeping a few fish in it. Maybe only 1 green terror or JD. I'll probably add a power head w/ sponge filter later on. Thanks again.
