hey guys havent been on in quite sometime, decided to take down my 55 gallon and start over, im thinking about starting a planted tank, ive been reading into it somewhat, im goin more for warm water look such as the amazon river, any help on plant types and ideas to get me started would be great!! my tanks cleaned out along with everything ready for a fresh start!

thinking of goin with a pacu or something like that, id love to have a peacock bass but my tanks to small..

Pacu gets to big for a 55. Pacus get to big for just about anything lol and if you did have a tank big enough for one they'd eat your plants down the roots.

If you want a South American biotope that shouldn't be too hard a lot of the common trade fish are from there. I had a school of exodons for a while in my 55. They're south American chacarins if your looking for something small, and aggressive, Exo's are kinda like giant dainos on crack. Problem is they're also pretty much incompatible with anything else and not very personable as 'pet' fish. However they'll leave your plants alone and cant send you to the hospital like some of their bigger cousins might be able to.

A jack dempsey is south American and about the right size for a 55g. I think they're buetiful fish especially the electric blue variety's. Plus dempseys are easy to find and wont cost you too much. Dempsey like a lot chiclids are going to be a pain in a planted cause they like to dig. A dempsey is also a specimin fish for the most part as they are rather territorial.

Pike chiclids are also cool and as they are in fad atm shouldnt be hard to find they however share many of the disadvantages of the dempsey.

Angels would be good. South American about the right size, look impressive when well cared for and I don't think they'll bother your plants too much and they can even be kept with some other fish.

Just some ideas. Their plenty of small schooling fish that would fit a SA biotope as well.

Angelfish :grinno:
They're not monsters but you can stock more of them...and you can put clown loaches for the bottom :D

Some people may argue that clown loaches a 12" depth isn't enough for clown loaches but it takes a long time for them to grow large and you could always sell them if u cant upgrade in the future...they're in pretty high demand.
