i built a stand for a 29 gallon; it's 2' tall, 13" wide, and 31.5" inches long. (it has a top that that fits onto the frame that is 33" by 15"). i was wondering if a standard 55 gallon would be okay on top of it? the math goes like this: 48" long tank MINUS a 32" stand = 16" ....DIVIDED by 2 (since the overhang is on both sides) = 8" of overhang on each side of the stand. and at about 8 lbs per gallon plus the weight of the tank its about 500 lbs total. divided per inch makes about 10.5 lbs per vertical inch (500/48)... TIMES 8 inches... makes 84 lbs hanging off each side edge of the stand.

assuming i built the stand strong enough to hold it, should a 55 gallon be just fine even with that amount of overhang on each side? if you guys want pictures of the stand let me know and ill get my camera out and working tomorrow and post some pics up then.

Personally.... I wouldnt trust it. If you built it yourself it shouldnt be hard to fortify. Build something on 1 or both of the edges to support the extra weight.

i thought of that and decided against it because i thought it would make an uneven surface between the two stands. plus one stand would be 33" and the other something like 15"... which would just look strange. i could build a solid 4' top though that spans both of them. that would keep it from being uneven and putting stress on the silicon seams.
