It has a been a month or so since I bought my juvenile peacocks for my 55 gallon and I decided to go with a species tank of one type. I think I got a male female ratio of 2:8 or 3:7, I can't quite tell. But I have one carrying some babies in her mouth at the moment. I just noticed last night. She had been steering everyone away from the bext hiding spot lately so I figured something was up.

I doubt this brood will make it just due to inexperience, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I have one runt that is still at the 1.5-2" size I bought them at, his eyes are so big for his body. Nobody bothers him though, so I figure the fry might actually have a chance.

I didn't ever plan on stripping the babies from the mother's mouth, I just want them to go at it until they can survive naturally.

is she holding eggs or fry? have you seen any fry?

often females will hold eggs when she is ready, even if males are not...

I havn't seen any fry, but how long will she hold the eggs? She moves her mouth around a lot like shes chewing, and she shakes a whole bunch and divebombs the sand when others get near. I figured she might have fry but I don't want to get real close to the tank and make sure because I don't want to scare them (they all hide when I get too close to the tank).

A mouthbrooding cichlid usually takes 3 weeks to "hatch" the eggs. When you have the water colder than 24 degrees celcius it might take longer.

If the female feels it isn't dafe to release the fry she can keep them even longer in her mouth

It takes 3 weeks for the eggs to hatch????

Holy crap. How is she going to eat?

I have 18 more days to wait then to see if they are actually fry or not?
