Is the UV sterilizer in-line or internal?

I might just be having a blond moment, but i am not sure what you mean by that. It hangs on the back of the tank and I used a powerhead to circulate the water through it.

That's completely understandable.

In-line means you integrate it in your plumbing like in you return line coming from your wet/dry filter.

Internal means that it sits right in your tank like a powerhead.

Can it sit by itself in the tank or a powerhead is a must?

I don't see any reason it could not be set up as an in-line as long as you could find fittings to adapt to you system. The light has a its own plug in so as long as it is hooked up to something that pulls the water past the light it should work. I hope this helps. :)
