I need ideas for my 55 gallon. I want to do a Tanganyika biotope. I was thinking about 6 leleupi( Neolamprologus leleupi), 6 julies (Julidochromis sp.), 6 fairies(Neolamprologus brichardi) and 6 of something else but not sure. can you give me some ideas? What do you think?

It is tough to make a Tanganyikan community tank. Most of the cichlids are bottom dwellers and will compete for the same territory. A lot of it is trial and error and depends upon the set up of the tank. I wouldn't mix the brichardi with the other fish. They can be a bit nasty and will take over the tank.

Try something like 1 pair rock dwellers, a group of small shellies and a group of smaller Cyps. Like Joe said, mix it up. Pick fish that inhabit different areas of the tank.

I think I will do a bare tank except for shells and sand. This is what I was thinking:

4x lamp. ocellatus
4x cyprichromis leptosoma
4x xenotilapia papilio.

What do you think?

i heard groups of at least six. so change it to six. is this a good or bad decision to make or should i bite the bullet and buy a 90 at petsmart and get some fronts and a few peacocks?

im setting up a tang tank right now in a 55. im going with multifasciatus, julidochromis transcriptus and eventually some cyps leptosoma. all small types of fish and fairly low aggression level.
im just getting 4 julies 4-6 multis for now till i can trade fry for cyps.

could I have 3 fronts and 4 peacocks in a 90?
