Hi, I currently have a 55 gallon tank stocked with the following: 1 female jack dempsey, 1 red spotted severum, 1 firemouth, and 5 tiger barbs...I was considering adding a school (about 5-6) of another smaller fish such as giant danios or something sized similarly. I do weekly 30% water changes also....Is my tank already stocked to the limit or is there room for a school of small fish that are compatible with cichlids if regular water changes are performed?

Well, 'most' of your fish are going to push close to 12" when they are finally full grown. So as of right now its pretty close to being full up. However, if you are just using it as a temporary tank for some of your larger fish, you could still add a few.

An option would be to get rid of the tiger barbs and replace them with a 'smaller', less aggressive species that doesn't occupy the same levels of the tank as the other fish.

Have you ever considered silver or marbled hatchetfish? They are really cool fish, and look totally awesome in medium to large schools. The only down side is they don't ever really push more than 3", and can be skittish, so a tight lid is a must. They will definately add life to your tank though! ;)

i bloody hate hatchet fish...jumping out ugh! stupid things! lol

I've never had any problems with them, but I guess having tight lids makes a difference. They are no worse than arowanas really...lol...except they can't break lids...

Rainbows are cool, very showy/flashy fish, but they seem to be happier in tanks 75 gal and larger. Unless you get one of the smaller species. Plus it just looks better when you keep fish from the same continent together...;)

The Tiger barbs are from Thailand, so that is out, but i totally agree with you.

And the only fish that has a chance of getting a foot long is the Jack, and that is assuming he has awesome genes.

I would say you are ok now, but things might get sketchy in the future or if you add anything.
