I currently have an african cichlid setup in my 55 gallon aquarium, but want to move on from the Malawi cichlids. So the main question is: Community or agressive tank? If I do aggressive I want to have something along the lines of a pair of American Cichlids. I also hear that jewels and SAs go together well because of water parameters. If I go community, I would want to get a nice stock of platinum angels and maybe mix in a pair of German Blue Rams? Give me suggestions and tips please!

those ideas both sound good. since you mentioned jewels, ill suggest a west african community. a couple pairs of hemichromis, a group of brycinus tetras, and a couple of syno catfish. ive been wanting to try this setup for awhile.

if you want aggressive go for a single central or south american cichlid. two cichlids i always recommend for a 55 are jd and gt. both are classics, fun fish to keep. another option are salvini cichlids. yet another fish which im very interested in but have never kept are nosferatu cichlids. ive seen them in stock at several places recently and they are gorgeous.

then again if you really like jewels you could probably go african and do a pair of five spot jewels in a 55.

good luck with your tank.

I have a SA biotope in my 55.

2 Redhead Tapajos (Breeding pair)
1 EBJD (3")
4 Colombian Tetra
1 L200 Green Phantom

I'm very happy with the tank. IMO, the RH Tapajos go great in 55's especially as a pair.

I would totally go with a pair of GTs.
Love them and if I ever get another 55 I will be getting then
