First thing. I do not want to get grilled for these questions. :)

I just got a 55 gallon tank and I want to get an Oscar. Doing my research every where that I went sent to get a 75+ tank. A couple of days ago I decided I wanted a green terror as a tankmate. I know that 55 gallons is too small for one Oscar and very small for a green terror + Oscar.

So here the question. Can I buy a small (2-3) Oscar and a small green terror and put them in a 55 gallon tank? Then about 10-12 months down the road get a 125+ tank for the both of them?

Or I could skip the whole Oscar thing ( really dont want to) and get different cichlids to put in my 55 gallon tank and noth worry about getting a bigger tank.

Thank you.

Sounds like a fine plan to me. I have two Oscars and a bunch of other fish in my 55, and they are fine right now, but will need a larger tank soon.

How long have you had your Oscars, just so I can get a rough timing to upgrade my tank?

Oscars grow quick..........I have seen lots grow to 10 inches within a year........With the minumum filtration and 50% water changes every week, along with a varied diet, a 2-3 inch Oscar will grow 6-8 inches easy within the first year.........I'd say get the 125g within a month or two...........Like the rest of us, the 55g usually turns out to be COnvict breeder.............

Just skip the whole Oscar thing, they are just pigs and produce alot of waste in your tank! Try a GT, salvini, jd, or some other ca/sa cichlids? GL, your gonna need a bigger tank in a year or sooner tho!

Maybe 6 months or so? They were pretty small, maybe an inch or so when we first got them, and now they are at least 5 inches each. They do grow fast, but as long as you have plans for that and to upgrade to a bigger tank within a few months it's no big deal. They do produce a lot of waste though.

You could do a LOT of really cool things with a 55 and smaller cichlids.

Smaller cichlids you may find at your LFS:
keyhole
firemouth
convict
rainbow
salvini
rams
kribs
african rift cichlids
apistograma

of course there's like a billion other opotions too, but you may have to special order these

OK, I thank everybody for their insite, but I think I am getting a 75 gallon tank now. Would I still be able to go ahead with the Oscar and GT or just 1 Oscar?

Good choice!

Just one oscar, but you could defintely fit a few smaller fish in there as tank mates IMO. Just make sure they're too large to fit into the O's mouth/ that they don't bully the oscar if you get them both at around the same size.
