i would like to start a chiclid tank and need a good stocking option. I would love tons of colors, vaiouse sizes and so on a little of everything. The tank wouod have tons and tons of caves, crevises ect. What I plan to do it put a whole bunch of slate rock i the middle building like a wall of caves for them.

Your first african cichlid tank?

If so, go mbuna. There's a wide variety, cheaply available and can be overstocked in tanks (large tank [100+ gal] not neeed)

If it's not your first african tank, then go Lake Tanganyika OR Lake Victoria OR Lake Malawi Haps/peacocks.

Good luck ! :headbang2

I should probably clarify. You can go mbuna if you want. Like I said, they are cheap and widely available.

However, if you have experience with fish (as I know you most likely do); you can go with Lake Malawi Haps/peacocks or Lake Tanganyiki cichlids like Frontosa. (Or do both in 1 tank). I say if you have experience because peacocks and haps are more expensive and harder to find than mbunas. Thus, you'll have to order them or go out of your way to find some good looking fish.

I had a lot of mbunas for a while, now I'm moving towards Haps. Many American cichlid lovers don't care for Africans because they think all African cichlids are mbunas. However, we African lovers know better !

Here's a good link that shows many of the African cichlid fish. You can tell which are mbunas from the familiar "tubular" body shape. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/african_cichlid_genus_gallery.php

Good luck with your African Cichlid tank. They are very hardy fish and are VERy agressive. You'll have a lot of fun watching them. :headbang2:headbang2

Where I live everyone seems to be into Africans.

if i were you i would get an oscar a few discus and maybe some blood red parrots and a flowerhorn you would just need a LARGE tank but it would be worth it especially watching them eye the goldfish when set the bag in the tank to get acclimated to the temp

The op already has a 55, so I don't understand your suggestion. All of those fish combined would be far too much for a 55.
