Hey Guys! I just recently acquired a new 55 gallon tank from the Petco 1$ a gallon sale. Was just curious on some ideas for stocking it. It would be cool to maybe have one breeding pair of some kinda cichlid. Not sure if i want to go african or American. I would like a larger fish 6+ Inches. What ideas do you guys have for it? I would like a pair that would be suitable for life. Depending on there aggression i would probably only keep the pair in the tank.

Thanks Guys!

If new to cichlids, start at a small size level of under 5 inches.............Cichlids are prolific breeders............Get a community of convict cichlids...............Within two weeks, a pair will have bonded by then and layed eggs.........When the fry hatch, siphon the wigglers into a 20-55g growout tank...........If one does not expect to have an extra growout tank, then leave the wigglers with the parents to grow..........If there are any extras in the tank, other than the breeding pair, then add plants/driftwood/lots of clay pots..........

Dempsey going to get a little to big for a 55g. I have my mating pair in a 75g. still a little small for them. convict pair should work. nothing else in tank tho far as more fish go.

How long do they take to get that size tho? 2,3 years? And they may not even reach 5" my buddy has had one for 3 years a male who is 4"

Properly cared for they usually do hit 5-6 for males and females at least 4. Granted this takes years its still the size they can attain if given the right conditions
