So what you all think of 1 male convict and 2 green texas 3 filament barbs for a 55? I'll have a 50 bow but wont set up tell I move in my own place, convict is 4 inches and the two Texas about 4 to 5 inches.

The texas are going to get big, if you have 2 males dominant will probably kill subdom, if 1 male and 1 female, they will probably breed and kill convict. Good chance the male could kill female as well since there's not much room to run for large fish in a 55. Would be better to do a small group of convicts or Honduran Red Point's, or similar amatiltlania species, and some non-cichlid tankmates. Ameca splendens would be great, because they are quick and tough, but most larger livebearers or tetra should work

Well been offered a free full set up 200g, I'll be picking up on the first, so the 55 will be temporary lol, think itll work with lower temps?

I wouldn't lower the temps, the first meaning in 6 days? Sure, the fish will be fine until then. If you mean the first of the year, that might still work, but good chance somebody would die before then

I agree with Gourami Swami that although things may be copasetic for a short time when young, a 50 gal is way too small for any Herichthys.
They are very territorial, and aggressive when put in too small a space, with any other cichlids.
Here is a shot of a half grown Herichthys.

a few months later he and his mate took over a 150 gal tank, trying to kill everything else in it.
