im getting a 55 gallon or so from a friend its 18" wide and the length and height i dont know i do know its longer than it is high..

but i dont know what fish to put in it

If its 18" wide, it is probably a 75 gallon. Most 55g are 48"x12", 75g are usually 48"x18".

it could be anything, that's why you Americans should convert to the common sense system erm.. I mean metric system, W00t g0 BASE TEN NUMBER SYSTEMS@@!@!@! WE RULE!
(if you always measure in lengths you won't get confused by how large a gallon is and what shape)

can 2 clown knifes be in the same tank as 2 bichirs?
