I might be getting a 55 gallon tank soon. i just saw the add in the newspaper this morning and im waiting to call. so what natives can go in there? also the tank might get planted later on if i can upgrade the light on my 90 and put the light that is on the 90 now on the 55. so this will be a north american biotype. IDEAS?

BTW i am not building my monster tank because i found out you cant move plywood tanks and i plaan to move in 4-5 years

Throw your madtom in there along with a green sunfish and a pumkinseed. Or scrap the greeine and go with a bluegill. I guess it all depends on what you want.

ya a pumpkin seed would be good. i know there are some small ones in the henipen and in a creek where i flyfish. can both madtoms live in the 55?

Unless your madtoms are stonecats you can keep a group(4-5) of full size madtoms in a 55, given the proper hiding places.

I wouldn't recommend a bluegill or green sunfish as they tend to be aggressive. You are better off with a couple of pumpinseeds or orange spotted sunfish. You won't be able to keep anything smaller (minnows, darters) though you may get away with large logperch or sculpins.

In general bluegills can be aggressive (In my experience more so than greensunfish), but unless you are adding a 10" BG to the tank you should be ok. Start with small fish and keep a eye on them. I keep both greenies and bluegill together in two tanks. The only real aggression was between two greenies. Around feeding time the BG gets fired up, other than that he is very calm. I do however keep both tanks planted a little on the heavy side, and that may help. Whats nice about the green sunfish is how quick they tend to adapt to the aquarium. I doesn't seem to matter how big they are when you get them, in a few days they are eating out of your hand.

IME bluegills are only aggressive to others of the same species. Even though they are a schooling fish, if you only have a few together they will pick on each other alot, but they are very neat fish, maybe smarter than even oscars and other cichlids.

i think i should wait and save up for a 75 or maybe higher. i saw the add in the paper and didnt realy think about it. if i had a bigger tank i could kkeep some better monsters. so thanks for the help. i hope the right tank comes my way.

why cant you move a plywood tank? i saw go for ur monster tank, im building my 1350 outta plywood, just dont mount it in the wall.

You cant move a plywood tank because the plywood shifts and the epoxy sealant will crack. anyways now that i decided not to do it i dont realy want to. i will stay with smaller tanks till i have my own house. plus it would be hard to move a 8 foot tank to another state.
