well i got my 55 up and cycled, now on to the fish. at first i wanted to do a mbuna tank with some labs, saulosi, zebras, stuff like that. but i found a new lfs, and they had some very nice colorful peacocks. the only problem is, they were 15 bux. if i got the peacocks, i could get a catfish, maybe some rams or some type of dithers to vary the stock a little. i keep going back and forth on which route i should go. im coming to you guys to help me make my decision lol. what do u think??

heh... well I started with the mbuna, and then added the more exspensive peacocks/haps... then saw them get nipped and off went the multiple tank syndrome. But with a 55 I think I would go with the mbuna, you can have more in there and they tend to stay smaller. (Well say if you get some afras and such.)

thats what my original plan was, to keep mbuna because i could have more fish b/c theyre smaller...but the peacocks this new store keep are so colorful, plus ive always liked the way peacocks look, and are less agressive.

I fully understand your delema. But well you have to remember that with peacocks you have to get different male types if you want them to all show there color. So ok that is maybe 4 types in a 55, do able. And then you can get some cool looking haps that stay less than 6 inches. (I would tend to try to cap off at ~9 full grown 5-6 inch peacocks/haps in a 55.) And well it can look nice, no doubt about it. And as for the mbuna depending on what size you get it really will be like 16 fish to say 12. (IE if you stay away from the large zebras you can have more.) But price wise... well I can get most mbuna I want for ~10 bucks via the mail... haps/peacocks tend to be 20-30 depending on what type (of course I can get young unknown sex for a lot less.)

SO honestly if you had 75 or larger I would be arguing the peacocks/haps. But well I don't find the 55 that useful for the peacocks/haps unless it is for breeding... Like I said it can be done... but...

actually i am trying to get a used 75 right now on craigslist. if i get it, i think thats what im gonna do, a peacock/hap tank. i believe ima go with mbuna for now. ever since ive gotten the 29 gallon redone, ive been itching to go bigger lol. thanx for the comments guys

Use both tanks...
75 male peacock/hap
55 mixed mbuna

29 shellies
a couple of 20s for fry
then after a couple of months get a 125 and move them all around
Then.... You get the idea. You've made the snowball.
