So I am in the market for a 90 gallon tank for what I hope will eventually be a breeding pair of severums. I have 4 juvenile turquoise severums in a 55 right now. They are about 3-3.5" long each. One of them might be pushing 4" as she/he is clearly larger than the others. The plan is to move them to a 90 ASAP and wait for a pair. If no pair forms, rehome them and get more juvies to get my pair.
Anyways, once I get them in a 90, I will have the 55 they are currently in available for other residents. I have a couple of ideas that I want advice on. Now this will be a permanent home for the fish I have in mind, so no grow out recommendations please. My water parameters are a pH of 7.2-7.3, GH of 10-12 dH, KH of about 8 dH, temperature of 81-84 degrees constantly, several pieces of driftwood and live plants are optional depending on fish being housed.
The first is to do a discus tank with 4-6 discus, a school of 5 or more small Cory cats and maybe a small school of 10-15 rummy nose tetras. I love this idea and the only thing holding me back is the discus. They are super expensive and reportedly very fragile. I have read a lot about them and the very varied ideas on their care. I can get past the expense. They are so beautiful it would be worth it. My question about them is this: could I get away with doing 25-50% water changes twice a week? The maintenance will be the potential deal breaker here as I don't want to have to do daily water changes.
Another fish I love are keyhole cichlids. I have a few ideas for tankmates. I am thinking 4 keyholes with 4 angelfish and maybe a few breeding pairs of guppies so the angels and keyholes can eat the fry. I know keyholes are shy and should not be housed with larger cichlids, so another idea is 2 keyholes, 4 Bolivian rams and a school of lemon tetras. A third idea is to house 4 keyholes with 4 discus (best of both worlds). Not sure if keyholes and discus can get along or if there is enough space for the last idea.
The third fish I love is the geophagus tapajos (red or orange head species). I love the colors on these fish and they are so very beautiful. My only issue is their eventual size. Males can potentially max out at 8". My tank is 12.5" deep. Could they live comfortably in a 55? If so, how many? If I get the geos, it will probably be just them in the tank. I would get 4-6 of them and be done stocking.
