a 36" tank would fit the space better, I have always thought the swimming room in the 55g to be better but my FH does not swim very much it mostly tries to get my atention in the very corner of the tank.

If possible you should get a 48"-18" footprint tank, a 75,90, or 110g, your FH would be much happier.

I was in the same situation when i was shopping for a tank and chose the 65g. The breeder base size of 36x18 is pretty comfortable for most fish that will be in the 12-14" range. I think the 55g is a better choice for medium fish up to about 10".

Of course part of my choice had to do with the fact that I was getting back into the hobby after 20+ years and was not sure if I was still going to like it. So I purchased my tank used and this was the best choice I had at the time. There were no 75g in black (with black silicone) at the time on craigslist, let alone with stands or nice filters. My 65g had all this for $200.

Long story short; I did enjoy the hobby as much as I did as a teenager and now my 65g is officially a "grow out". I just purchased a 120g (60x18x26) which will house my Midas.

But if you do have options on the purchase as SMS said go with the 48x18 base size in the 75, 90 or 110 gallon. This would be best for your fish!
