I keep cichlids and other larger oddballs and have never kept community or small fish, but for some reason lately I've been wanting a tiger barb tank. I'm thinking of going out this weekend and picking up a 55g and stocking it with...

10 tiger barbs
15-20 Neons
6 Cories
1 rubberlip pleco
4 ghost cats

also will be running 2 aquaclear 70's.

I think its pretty stocked if not overstocked, but would like suggestions on other commonly available small fish. Oh...I hate gourami's, and most tetras (bleeding hearts, buenos aires...), but was considering hatchets.

Redtailed Sharks are very common and look cool, they get around 4-6". I haven't seen one past 4", but that doesn't mean anything lol...

Rainbowfish are very colorful too, never owned one and they are alittle over priced (imo) whenever I see them.

Are you gonna get normal, green, or albino tiger barbs? I Think the normal an green ones look the best. Some people here have said the green are not as hardy as the normal tiger barbs though.

Aside from your tigers killing the neons your stock looks alright. Can't say I like the glass cats, but it's your tank :)

Good luck!

someone correct if but i really do think glass cats are brackish. so they wouldnt do good with your stock. AND if there not brackish i apolagize, and dont get a group of 4 get 6 so there happier.

I had actually forgotten about green tiger barbs, I think I may scratch the neons, and glass cats and do a big mix of regular and green tiger barbs(I dont like albino). How many Tiger barbs could I get away with still keeping the 6 cories and the rubberlip pleco. Also I know Tiger barbs can be nipper but do you thing I could do angel fish? I'm thinking a tank filled with long flowing plants and driftwood would look really nice with a big group of tiger barbs and a few angels flowing in and out of the plants, with the cories cruizen the bottom of the tank would look really nice.

I want a school of glass catfish...can't house em right now though:( When we had first gotten our 20gal and set up a small tropical community we threw one in the tank (This was before I started reading or learning anything...I still feel bad about the fish we started out with:() and he really freakin cool. I'd imagine with a happy school of 6+, they'd be pretty baller.

I've changed my mind on all but the tiger barbs, here is the stock I'm getting.

10 REG Tiger Barbs (not ordered because I can get them locally)
10 Snakeskin Barbs (already ordered)
5 Marble Hatchets (already ordered)
5-6 Cories (not orders because I can get locally)
1 Rio Negro Pleco (L-135) (already ordered)

hopefully there are no problems here ( but let me know if there are), I'm kinda stoked about this setup.

Sounds pretty sweet to me man! Couldn't tell you if there's any problems, but I can't imagine there would be with those types of fish. I haven't heard of the snakeskin barbs...are the similar in size/speed/temperament to the tigers? I'm thinking of getting 8-10 tigers for my 65 to put with my bichirs and dempsey, but I haven't decided yet.

Sounds Great. I've always wanted a tank like this too. I'd add a canister to the filter mix. Perhaps a Fluval 305.
