What would be a good mix of cichlids for a 55g? How many would work for life.

You have many options my friend, but If it was me, I would go for a colony of Lifalili Jewels (forest jewels) 6-8 of these would work in a 55 for life, as they get only ~4 in long.
Either that or shellies. Neolamp. shell dwellers are small, and I would toss in a few brichairdi.

Or you could go with egyptian mouthbrooders, or the often overlooked perfect aquarium cichlid Herotilapia Multispinosa (SA)

or heres my little "easiest answer" to your question.

you could do convicts if you need to feed anything or constantly have a supply of baby fish for some reason.

Or you could start with a few kribs and get many kribs. Ditto cons

Or you could go with mbuna, get a colony of something, theres lots of choices.

======================

The bottom line is,
You can probably keep several cichlids of the same kind,
of any kind of african or CA/SA that dosen't get much bigger than 4 inches
But you can most likley have only one dominant male in a 55.

Or you can have several males of different smaller species as long as there are no females to fight over, though I strongly oppose this as it forces all your cichlids to be celibate for life.

I would highly reccomend a colony

Dovii or Umbee

Are you kidding? He said cichlids to keep in a 55 for life.

I guess a 20" Umbee or 16" Dovii would be fine in a 48x13 55 gallon tank??

Anywho....Dude if it is a 55 for life, stick 2-3 (at the most) cichlids that max at about 4". Assuming you will have decor, each will have its own space and room to live.

There are plenty of really nice Africans that fit that bill.

Yep Serious, you could fit at least 10 Dovii in there :screwy:

Herotilapia Multispinosa (SA)

They are CA, but I agree a Rainbow, and Convict and a FM would be a good mix for 55

or maybe a Jack Dempsey and Convict

As fry for 2 months?? Your statement is both irresponsible and ridiculous

Species name: Parachromis dovii

Common name: Wolf Cichlid, Dovii Cichlid

Family: Cichlidae

Order: Perciformes

Class: Actinopterygii

Maximum size: Males around 28-30 inches; Females around 15-18 inches

Environment: Freshwater. These are monster fish and are definitely not a beginner fish.

Origin: Central America, Hondorus, Costa Rica, Nicaragua

Temperament: Very Aggressive. The word Dovii, “peaceful dove” is definitely an understatement.

Aquarium setup: A single dovii should be kept in a tank no smaller than a 165 gallon and a pair in a 220 or more. These are extremely territorial and aggressive fish and should only be kept with other species in tanks other 250 gallons and above. Provide plenty of rock work and caves for hiding places.

1 ebjd, 2 herotilapia multispinosa, and 2 kribs would look nice. Still would leave a little room for 5 or 6 small, but not too small schooling fish. Something around the size of mollies or swordtails, the ebjd will eat smaller fish like lemon and neon tetras.

What about a one species tank?
