I was looking around at my LFS and they had a whole batch a geo's, convicts, and firemouths.......well i was thinking of a community tank setup....maybe like
3-GEO's
1-Male Convict
3-Firemouths
1-catfish
8-giant danios
10-tiger barbs.....

would this be overstocking the tank?
could these fish be kept together?
and How do you sex these cichlids (geo, FM)???

Im just seeing my options for this 55g i have....I dont know if i want a community setup or just a one big fish....

geos are gonna need a much larger tank than a 55g depending on which type they are. Very minimal tank decor also and you could get by with some smaller species in a 75gallon.. but even that's pushing it. I had entertained the thought of geos as well.

Course you can always try it out and see how it goes. Maybe you'll run in to a deal on a bigger tank in the next year.

I would definately leave the geos out. The lone con could work with the firemouths but cons are usually more aggressive so keep an eye on him. The tank would be overstocked but manageable with frequent water changes.

could i do like 4 firemouths and 1 male convict, 6 corydoras, 10 tiger barbs and 10 giant danios???

That is still a lot of fish for a 55g. I wouldn't do more then 4 6'' CA cichlids and maybe the tiger barbs. So what ever combo of cons/FM you like. I wouldn't get a con pair, because they will be too aggressive.
If you want a lot of cichlids in a 55g why not do SA dwarfs? They have tons of color too.

what if i did just a convict tank...1 male and four females....what tankmates could i add?

Not much could even lose 3 females. I'd get all females or all males unless you're trying to breed them.

how many males could i keep in a 55g....and what tankmates could i put with them

F.Gold Severum, Festivum, F.Convict, Leporinus.

Lasted about 4 years no problems, until i got lazy with maintenance and lost the Festivum.

My gold severum tried to mate with the Festivum many times. She laid eggs atleast a dozen times after she reached the 4" mark. Nothing ever came of her dropping eggs though. I dont' think my Festivum was a male heh
