I'm planning on setting up a 55g in my basement in the spring, would an aquaclear 110 be enough filtration for that size tank? It's going to house a breeding pair of cichlids, either severum, blue acara or Honduran red points. Maybe a few dither and a bushy nose pleco.

If it were me I would run two AC70's to be able to alternate between cleaning and not have to worry about killing off BB.
I have two filters on all my tanks, 2 AC110's on a 75 gal, 2 AC110's on 125, AC110 and FX5 on a 120. and in the sump of my 500 I have 2 separate DIY filters with two return pumps.

Yeah....it will be fine but I would personally do as KAWAMIKIE suggests and run two AC70's for those stated reasons but also to spread the current out over a longer span. You could put each one 12" or so and get great current and good filtration.

i would also recomend 2 ac70's ... but 1 ac110 with double sponge and staggered cleanings of sponge ....:popcorn:would probably work equally well...
