the thing is that im starting with american cichlids and a few days ago i got my hands on a breeding young pair of bolivian rams. i have ordered 3 more and a 15 school of tetra neons for my tank.
im considering having maby a school of hatchetfish for the top part of my tank.
i can get one single small rockteil juv as my main fish but im a little afraid of him having lunch on the neons when bigger

so..
what can be my main fish? is the rockteil an option? (im looking for a pair of bigger cichlid than the rams to put in there but im not into angels and discus are really not an option since im getting started)
how many more neons can i stock in my tank?
can i have maby a pair of apsitogrammas in there? (considering cacatuoide or agazzisi)
maybe there are many fish for a 55g tank but hatchetfish are just an idea for having a more balance tank getting fish in the lower, middle and top areas and are completly optional

my goal is to have (if posible) all the above mentioned
what do you think? is it posible? if so try to give me numbers on how many of the fish to not overload my filter.

i have a rena xp canister filter, a small aquaclear hang on the back filter and a sponge filter also a 150 watts rena smartheater
the sponge and AC filters are not in use at the moment.

severum will eventually pick off neons. maybe an angelfish

Yeah with those neons you already have any CA/SA cichlids would most likely make a meal out of them....And not to metion those rams they would proablly be killed by any CA/SA cichlid as well.

Why not just make it a ram tank u can add 1 more pair and maybe some corey cats just a sugestion though.

In my opinion, if you really want to do a SA cichlid tank, you should base the tetras around the cichlids that you want to keep and not the other way around. The neons will be fine with the bolivian rams and hatchetfish, but not with any larger cichlids. Also, if you are going with a harem of 6 rams (try 2 males, 4 females) I wouldn't add any apistogrammas to the mix because there won't be enough room for all of their territories. You could go with:

6 Bolivian Rams
20 Neon Tetras
10 Hatchetfish
and maybe a BN pleco

If you ditch the neons and go for a larger group of tetras, you could definitely add a Rotkeil to the tank. IMO, it would be worth it since they are one of my favorite fish of all time ;)

You could do:
6 Bolivians
1 Rotkeil
10 Larger tetras (Bleeding Hearts, Colombians, Congo Tetras, ect)

Hope this helps :)

I wouldn't get a sev or any cichild the same size that could eat the neons. i would stick with dwarf cichlids, angels or discus if you want to keep it SA.
