The basic items you will need for a 55 gal reef are (in no particular order): a 55 gal tank, stand, protien skimmer, at least 55 lbs (preferably more than that though) of Live Rock, a good (the best lights have a reflector for each bulb) set of lights (Power Compacts could work, but T5s or Metal Halide would be better) and time. Those are the minimums for a reef.

Now for the highly recommendeds: a sump; the bigger the better. If your tank has been drilled for overflows, great. If not, you can get a hang on back type overflow. There are many details pertaining to sumps that I'm not going to get into here. There are much better writeups on them here and on other sites as well.

Hope that helps. :)
