im confused on which to do i already have convicts and i wanted to try my hands on african cichlids. I hear they have better personality. Ok so im getting a 55 gallon and i was wondering how many demasonis i can put in a 55. I want to breed them. How much they usually cost in a fish store? thx for ur help.

I've seen them locally for a much as $20 a piece. You should look for them at retailers that specialize in cichlids, African cichlids primarily. You can get them as low as $4 a piece that way, depending on size.
With demasoni, the more the better. They are highly aggressive toward each other as well as other fish that look like them. For this reason they are usually recommended to be kept in high numbers. Usually 12 minimum. You will add more as males kill eachother off. Too many males in one tank simply doesn't work out too well and even at very young ages they are showing the behaviors they are notorious for and little males battle their way to the top of the dominance ladder.
Some people would pack a tank absolutely full of demasoni. That's not my personal preferance since I like to see a little water in between fish.

as for breeding them it can be a very profitable investment as they are a popular fish, and my young colony has yet to produced fry but already i have a list of people willing to pay $8 for fish around an inch and a few for $14 for 2-3inchers. They are a beautiful fish

yellow labs are good beginner africans, or you could start with maybe a few peacocks. It really is just going to depend on what color you want to have in your tank. I like the peacocks personally but i also have a breeding colony of Demasoni and of Yellow Labs.
