I built this stand for a 55g tank (48"x12"x21") based around the information in this thread. In the back of my mind I keep getting this nagging feeling to put in a middle support to keep the 2x4s from bowing and destroying the tank and my living room, but I also would really like to leave it open for easy access to filtration, etc. Will this stand hold as is? or should I add in some additional support in the center?

Also, the stand has the same footprint as the tank (except for an extra 1/2" on each side) and I intend to put some 3/4" plywood on the top. Thanks in advance.

It's more than adequate to hold a 55g without center supports, and without a plywood top.

I wish my $250 purchased stand was as sturdy as yours!

Nice job!

this is a 55 gallon, its been setup and running for around a year +-2 months

it has also been moved twice

nice, im gonna build one soon too, just gotta get some supplies first, hopefully within the next few weeks, my design is also based on the look of it, because im building the frame and then covering the outside with stained wood (haven't chosen the type yet) so it would look like a cabinet ill take some picks and post em up when i do the project. very nice job though (mine is a 55 gallon too)
