i was going to set up a 55gallon tank with discus and angels and was wondering how many of each to toss in.

I would go with 6 discus and nothing else. Reason: discus need to be in groups, get as big as your open hand, and 55 gals. is not a lot of water. If you try to cram a lot of fish in a smallish tank, water quality problems will develop, and you will be back on the forums asking for advice on how to treat sick discus.
Hi... I agree with Hillbilly also... Especially if this is your first time with discus... Either pick discus or angels not both as the main fish.. If discus I suggest only the discus until you learn to properly care for them.. I am assuming that you've not had discus before and that you are not getting adults.. If I'm mistaken then your skill levels and a bigger tank would possibly allow you to combine the two species..
