So I want to move my fish to a new 125 I just bought. any advice? will i need to cycle the new tank? should i just do water changes into it for a few weeks until it fills? I have a wet/dry off a 300g tank im going to swap to my new setup, and a magnum 350 also just to move water around, should i swap the canister filter and some driftwood and let the tank cycle? any help will be appreciated, thanks

Any established media you can put on that tank would be a great help. Are you saying you can put that wetdry on the new tank?

Matt

i agree with Matt.
even the established media filtering brand new water will condition it well.
i'd cycle for a week maybe? seemed to have worked well in the past.

If you're moving everything to the new tank, including the filter, you won't notice a cycle at all. Your tank will still be cycled. Just run the old filter on the new tank concurrently with the new filter for awhile.

ya i have my 55g running with the wet/dry and a canister from my friend's 300g that popped, but i didnt know if i should just swap fish and filters and everything over in a day, or swap the canister filter over with a water change and some substrate and driftwood, and run it for a week, then move the fish. thanks for the help.

as long as you keep the old filtration runnin on the new tank, you'll be able to transfer them over in one day. You don't even need the old water, just add new water, get it up to temp, add conditioners, then add the old filter, then the old substrate and decor then the fish. This worked well for me during a move, when I couldnt keep the old water, but still had the matured filter.

How would go about this new substrate, not to hijack thread but Im planning to do something similar soon.

mix it with the old substrate, if you wana keep it the same. Or just replace the lot.
